Van Gemmill - Dave Moore - Steve Lutkie - Darrell Baker - Warren Hardy
Joining the top teams from 2012 at 81 Speedway this Saturday night during the annual Awards Dinner will be five individuals who will be inducted into the 81 Speedway Hall of Fame. The five range from 3 legendary drivers to two track employees with a combined 74 years at the 3/8ths oval that are still active at the speedway today.
*Van Gemmill, of Ponca City, Ok. Known in many circles as "Van The Man," his career began back in the early 60's competing in the stock car division. His graduation to the Late Models would make him a house-hold name in the racing community throughout the 70's and 80's. After some time away from the seat of a race car, Van has returned to the seat of a Modified over the past couple of seasons, and looks to campaign a full schedule in 2013.
*Dave Moore, of Wichita, Ks. Dave was another one of the premiere open wheel drivers that competed at 81 Speedway and around the area throughout the 70's and 80's. His name and ability to adapt to dry slick ovals was a staple placing him in the elite of champions at 81 Speedway.
*Steve Lutkie, of Wichita, Ks. Steve joins his brother Mike and his uncle Charlie as a 3rd member of the "Racing Lutkie's" from 81 Speedway now in the Hall of Fame. Steve's career began back in the early 70's competing in the Semi Late division, and continued into a stand with the Late Models. His numerous championships and titles seemed to be just part of the family tradition. One which Steve plays a big part in today helping his nephew at the speedway on saturday nights in the modified division.
*Darrell Baker, Haysville, Ks. It was 1970 when Darrell drove an ambulance to 81 Speedway for the company hired to assist in emergency and safety at the track. Darrell has never left. Not only is Darrell well versed in safety and emergency techniques, but he is a devout race fan. The start of the 2013 season will mark his 43rd year working as a safety and emergency official at 81 Speedway.
*Warren Hardy, Wichita, Ks. Warren started with 81 Speedway as the infield announcer in 1982. He came to work for the speedway as a full-time employee in 1984. The "Mouth of the South" reigns as the voice of 81 Speedway not only at the track but through local radio and television programs as well. Warren was inducted into the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
