2012 NCRA Sport Mod Season Review!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Midwest City, Oklahoma – November 12, 2012 - The fourth season for the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products southern sport modified division is in the history books with the tours all-time feature winner finally picking up his first series championship.
Travis Johnson of Enid, Oklahoma opened the 2012 season in early April by taking the lead with six laps to go to take the opener by one car length over Chad McNamara at 81 Speedway in Park City in what would be the first of four feature victories on the season, on his way to the division championship. Todd Decker, Ross McCartney and Caleb Edwards rounded out the top five.
After a year hiatus the tour returned to Enid Speedway in Enid, Oklahoma where a season leading 40 cars checked in and where Greg Deterding picked up his first career series victory at his home track. Decker, Curtis Allen, Brandon Smith and Bobby Smith, Jr. rounded out the top five.
Salina High Banks Speedway y in Northeastern Oklahoma played host to race number three on the season with Johnson back in victory lane, leading all twenty laps over a thirty-one car field. Joe Adams, Kinzer Edwards, Caleb Edwards and Decker rounded out the top five.
The two day West I-40 wing through Oklahoma and Texas was back on the schedule after a year hiatus where Johnson opened the weekend with a victory at Elk City Speedway in Elk City, Oklahoma. He took the lead from Robert Elliott with six laps to go to take the victory. Twenty-eight cars were on hand. The next night it was on to Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas with Johnson leading all twenty-five laps. Forty cars showed up at Bill Worthen’s beautiful three-eighths mile oval.
It was a weekend sweep in two different divisions for Johnson as he pulled his modified out of the garage and wired the NCRA modified tour field at Enid Speedway on a special Sunday night event.
C&P Racing Supply rookie of the year contender Joe Adams took the lead on lap six and held off Johnson to pick up his first career tour victory at 81 Speedway in the twenty lap feature finale. Andy Deterding, R. McCartney and C. Edwards rounded out the top five.
The tours first ever appearance at Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas on July 15th saw Missouri’s Scott Drake hold off Johnson to pick up the victory twenty-five lap victory, his first ever with the series. Jeremy Chambers, Jack Simmons and Jimmie Davis rounded out the top five.
The next night it was off to the 56th annual Hutchinson Grand Nationals at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas where C&P Racing Supply rookie of the year contender Caleb Edwards etched his name in the record books as only the second driver in the tour’s history to pick up the famed Hutch Nationals title. Brother Kinzer Edwards, who led the previous year’s Hutch Nationals during his rookie season before breaking with four laps to go finished second followed by Mark Harrisons career best finish in third followed by Johnson and R. McCartney.
What ended up being the season finale due to a couple of rain outs and cancelations, Todd Decker was declared the winner at 81 Speedway, picking up his first and only victory of the season. Chris Lyons finished a career best second, followed by Cleo Adams, Joe Adams and Chris Wilhite.
Below are a few facts and figures from the 2012 race season for the Bob Howard PDC and Mopar NCRA sport modified tour:
123 different drivers from five different states competed in at least one NCRA sport mod event during the 2012 race season. Among the states represented were: Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri and New Mexico.
Nine different drivers competed in all ten events that were held. They were Johnson, Todd Decker, Caleb Edwards, Joe Adams, Ross McCartney, Bobby McGehee, J.D. Choate, Chris Lyons and Courtney McCartney.
Those drivers only missing one event include Chad McNamara, Cleo Adams, Landon Maddox and Mark Harrison.
Drivers reaching NCRA sport mod feature winners circle in 2012 were: Travis Johnson (4), Greg Deterding, Joe Adams, Scott Drake, Caleb Edwards and Todd Decker.
Deterding, Adams, Drake and Edwards were all first time winners with the series.
Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas hosted their first ever NCRA sport mod sanctioned event with Drake picking up the victory.
Average car count was 31 per night with the highest car count coming at Enid Speedway in Oklahoma and Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo (40) and the lowest (22) at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas.
